Hi friends!
I am super excited about today’s post- it’s the first post in our Yummy Summer Fun series! For the next two weeks, we’ll be bringing you sensory, art, learning activities, and more based on some of our favorite summer treats. It seemed only fitting that we kick off our series with the ultimate summer delight- watermelon! So grab yourself a juicy slice, put your feet up, and celebrate summer with us!
Watermelon Volcano Dino World!
After we used up all the yummy watermelon to make our shakes, we didn’t want the empty shell to go to waste, so we put it to good use by making a watermelon volcano!

Watermelon Shakes
To dive into our watermelon fun, we decided a cool treat was in order. Although the twins LOVE plain ole’ watermelon, I thought it might be fun to try our hands at making some watermelon milkshakes, which were actually suggested by a Facebook fan.
To make our easy (and healthy) watermelon milkshakes, we used:
- 3 heaping cups of frozen watermelon cubes (seedless)
- 2 cups milk
- About 1/2 cup of Greek yogurt (honey-flavored)
- a splash of vanilla
- honey (to taste)
The twins were actually able to help quite a bit with the preparation of the shakes- I cut the watermelon flesh into long “fingers” so they could use their knives to practice cutting. Once all the watermelon was cubed, I froze it on parchment paper and then let the kids transfer it to the blender along with all of the other ingredients. This recipe is not an exact science- play around with the ingredients until you get the taste and consistency that you like. The results were delicious- the yogurt made the shakes nice and creamy, and the drizzle of honey added just the right amount of sweetness. When the shakes were done, I gave some to the twins and then snuck outside with the rest to snap a few photos.
Things were going great until…
Oh well. What can I say? It is summer, after all!
Watermelon Rice Jars
Speaking of our watermelon-scented sensory rice , I still had some left over after our watermelon activities, so I threw together a couple of gifts for some of our little friends using a few Ball jars I had up in my crafty stash. Cool, huh? Sensory play in a jar!
If you missed our scented watermelon rice, click on the photo below. You have to see the setup- it was super fun!
And if these activities have left you hungry, you might enjoy our watermelon ladybug pops- click on the photo to check them out, too.

So MUCH fun!! My girls are crazy for smoothies and milkshakes. We’ll have to try this recipe. And a watermelon volcano? Awesome!!
Thanks, Shaunna! I’m not sure who had more fun- me or the kids 😉
Wow, what a fun day! I love the photos and my son — who LOVES watermelon — says this looks like fun! He was concerned about the watermelon volcano (he said it was an old watermelon that wasn’t good to eat anymore) until I told him you’d already eaten up all the insides.
Those gift jars are stunning!
Thanks so much, Jessica! We had so much fun with these activities! I’m glad your little guy approves 😉
This is amazing!! I love themed days. The watermelon volcano small world is just phenomenal! And, I am still in love with that watermelon scented rice. It just looks so delicious and cheerful. What great little gifts! Yummy watermelon snacks too!
Thanks, Blayne! I always enjoy your baby themes, too!
Great post! Love the volcano. That looks like a perfect summertime activity!
Thanks, Jen! I’m so glad you like it! The kids had a blast with the “bolcano” 😉
Wow! What a fantastic theme based fun! Loved it. Pinning it already.
Yay! So happy you liked it, Veens! And thanks for pinning!
Very cool! Is it vinegar that you added to the soda to get the reaction? You said you added soda to make it gush out. Did I miss something?
Oh, oops 😉 That’s a total typo. That’s what I get for writing posts at odd hours of the night! Yes, it was vinegar- the baking soda was already in the bottle. I’m going to edit it now! Thanks for pointing it out- I would have noticed it in a year or something and been really mad at myself!
YUM! would love if you shared this on our #kidsinthekitchen linky this week http://lookwhatmomfound.com/2013/06/blueberries-right-from-the-garden-kidsinthekitchen.html
Looks like a lot of fun! We are doing summer camp at our house all summer long, we might have to try some of these fun activities.
