Felt Pumpkin Wreath Tutorial

Felt Pumpkin wreath at Twodaloo

Hi everyone! I thought I would take a break from baby shower preparations and sewing marathons to share a fun fall wreath with you. I made this for my front door, and will also be using it (with a few modifications) for a Little Pumpkin baby shower this weekend. Check back next week for the party details…you won’t want to miss it!

To begin, I took two styrofoam wreath forms and used a serrated knife to trim about 1/3 off each side. An electric carving knife would work well here, but I don’t have one so my serrated knife worked just fine.

Next, I attached the two large pieces together (see above) using Gorilla Glue and floral pins. I promise I am not a Gorilla Glue representative…I just love the stuff and use it for everything!

If you’ve never worked with floral pins, here’s a close up. I found a huge package of them for a few dollars in the floral section of Hobby Lobby, or you can purchase them here.

Next, I created a template and cut LOTS of circles out of orange felt with fabric scissors. I cut five circles per sheet of felt (standard size) and was able to stack and cut four sheets at a time, so the cutting didn’t seem that bad. Plus, I broke it up over a couple of days so it wasn’t so tedious. Still, you will need about 40+ sheets to cover your wreath, depending on how dense you make your felting.

Fold it like a taco

To make your little felt “tufts,” take a circle and fold it in half like a taco.

Fold in half again

Then fold in half again.

Lastly, pin it onto your wreath using felt pins or even straight pins (be sure they have heads). I’ve used both methods and they turned out great.

Half way done

Here is the wreath about half way done.

bare naked wreath

And here is the finished (albeit naked) wreath on my still unpainted back door. I’ll get around to it, I promise 😉

styrofoam stem

For the stem, I simply cut off a portion of one of the leftover wreath pieces.

burlap and twine on stem

Then I wrapped it in burlap and jute twine, securing with a few floral pins and some hot glue. I then used Gorilla Glue and floral pins to attach it to the top of the wreath.

initial "H"

To finish it off, I took this letter “H” that I had sitting in the attic (also from Hobby Lobby I believe) and embellished it with some fabric and burlap rosettes. Although it’s hard to see, the fabric is Riley Blake chevron in aqua and white. LOVE.

And that’s it! Now it graces my (also unpainted) front door.

I think it makes it look much better 😉

*Update: Here are a couple of variations on this wreath that I did throughout the season!

I suggest also making a black felt hat and a corncob pipe and it becomes a cute snoman. Hang some plastic eyes ( pkg. at JoAnns or Michaels, sometimes WalMart) on string in the meddle of the wreath and maybe a orange clay nose……if room!

What about making a snoman from the white wreath. Add black felt hat glue on cardboard and a corncob pipe, with hanging eyes and orange nose if room. I am going to make one!

  6. I love this wreath!! I was wondering though, how big are the circle that you cut? Thank you!

  7. I love this!!! I made a pumpkin over the last few days and already have it on my front door. I have also decided to make a wreath for my cusions bridal shower with her wedding colors and a letter M for her new last name. Great idea and thank you! :-)

  8. ok, how cute is this?! and I didn’t realize how time consuming it was! coming over from your feature on shaken together.

  9. Pumpkin shaped wreath! So cool! (And it works so well as well for the Christmas version) The felt pieces are beautiful :)

  10. I love this!! It seems so simple, but how do you attach the letter to the front? I keep seeing pretty wreaths that I want to make but can’t figure out how to attach the items on the front

  11. Could you please tell me what size wreath forms and felt circles you used? The link to a wreath form on Amazon in your post looks to be the wrong size (9″). I’m thinking maybe two 16-inchers would be right?
