Hello lovelies! Today I’m back with a super simple preschool craft idea as the third installment in our Spring Play Days series. This week I teamed up with some of my blogging buddies for three days of spring activities for kids to provide you with some seasonal play and learning inspiration. Be sure to check out Fun-A-Day!, Nothing if Not Intentional , Buggy and Buddy, and Fantastic Fun and Learning for more spring play ideas…after you check out our easy rainbow luminaries, of course!
Preschool Craft Idea: Easy Rainbow Luminaries
To create our rainbow luminaries, we gathered a few simple ingredients (Amazon affiliate links included):
- Mod Podge
- Powdered tempera paint
in a variety of spring colors
- Sponge brushes
- Mason jars (any jars would do)
First, I gave each of my little ones (age three) a mason jar, a paper plate full of Mod Podge, and a sponge brush and had them cover their jars with the Mod Podge. They very meticulously fulfilled my request- they love glue!
Next, I sprinkled several different colors of powdered tempera paint in a cheap plastic tray. I did this part myself while the twins were preparing the jars, but you could certainly have your kids do this, too!
Finally, for the most fun step of all, I had the twins roll their sticky jars in the powdered tempera paint. Since the jars are not perfectly smooth they didn’t get totally covered in the powder, so the twins enjoyed filling in all the gaps by sprinkling the powder on with their fingers.
After drying overnight, I gently brushed the excess powdered tempera paint off the jars with a stiff paint brush. The results are pretty enough to display in the daylight…
but they look super awesome illuminated by candlelight!
Spring Play Days!
I hope you enjoyed our final Spring Play Day activity! Don’t forget to check out what my friends are up to…so much inspiration at your fingertips!

Such an easy project - perfect for any age, but nice to see your little ones could do it.
These look so fun! Have you had a problem with the paint falling off since you made these? I was thinking of just covering the paint with mod podge when everything is dry, but do you think it would still have the same effect?
Hi Kirsylee! No, once I brushed off all the excess powder, I haven’t had an issue with the remaining paint falling off because it is embedded in the glue. I considered covering it with Mod Podge too, but was afraid it would make everything murky. If you try it, let me know!
