One of the most amazing things about having little ones is being able to watch them make discoveries. Something as simple as adding drops of color to a tray of snow is endlessly fascinating to them, and helps me revive my own childlike sense of wonder when it is lost in laundry and holiday preparations and just the business of life in general.
Last week’s abnormally cold weather brought with it a sizable amount of freezing precipitation. We called it snow, but it was really just mounds and mounds and MOUNDS of tiny ice pellets. The ice has made it treacherous to drive and impossible to make snowballs or snowmen, but it was perfect for exploring because it didn’t melt nearly as quickly as regular snow. So naturally, the first thing I did when we awoke to discover a winter wonderland was collect a couple of trays for the twins to explore.
After they touched and tasted for awhile, I brought out the liquid watercolors (find them on Amazon HERE) and let the twins choose some colors to experiment with. I gave them a couple of our favorite pipettes (find them HERE) and let them squeeze, drip, and mix to their hearts’ content.
The twins were very engrossed in this activity- color mixing is currently extremely fascinating for them and combining it with the ice was almost too much fun to handle.
They also enjoyed spooning the ice in and out of their watercolors.
Snow cone, anyone?
Of course, this is no revolutionary activity by any means, but then again- the simple ones are typically the best, right?

That looks like a lot of fun. We’re expecting new snow tomorrow (NJ) so we’ll have to try that! I brought some snow in yesterday and gave my toddler a squirt bottle of warm water to melt it, but I think adding colors would be awesome. Nice job!
Ooh, let me know how it went!!
Thank you so much! My twins loved it. With the snow the east coast has had lately, providing them with snow was not a problem. They spent atleast 45 minutes coloring the snow and asking to do this daily. I love the fact that I don’t have to bundle them up!
YAY! It makes me so happy to hear that you tried it and that your twins loved it! It really is so engaging for little ones! Thanks for making my day 😉
