Subway Art Holiday Card Display

Hi folks! Today I thought I would take a break from preaching about sensory play and show you a super quick and easy holiday card display that I whipped up last night around midnight.

Christmas cards are one of my favorite things about the holiday season, especially now that our family has expanded to include two little munchkins! I love picking out the perfect picture for our own family card, and the cards and photos we receive from friends and family each year serve as a warm reminder of all the love and support we are so lucky to have from the people who are most dear to us. This year I decided to use an existing art piece that I created last year (before I had a blog to write about it) using this fabulous tutorial at From Gardners to Bergers. It shows how to use inexpensive materials and some elbow grease to create a Z Gallerie-inspired piece of subway art. Not bad!

Unfortunately, I don’t have a string-free picture of the exact canvas I used, but the one pictured above is pretty similar. It was my first attempt at the tutorial, and while it turned out ok, I wasn’t completely happy with the fonts and distressing and wanted it to be much bigger. But you get the idea.

To create the card display, I simply took a fat piece of white yarn and wrapped it haphazardly around the canvas. You could pretty much use anything for this…pom pom trim or jute twine would be really fun, too!

To keep the yarn from slipping down with the weight of the cards, I used a few dots of hot glue to secure the yarn where it came in contact with the wood frame on the back of the canvas. I figured I could pull/scrape off the glue dots when Christmas is over, or I may keep it up as a display for family photos year-round. If you want something less permanent, try small pieces of duct tape or something similar.

Here is the finished product with a few cards added. I used mini-clothes pins to clip the cards to the yarn. I thought about embellishing the clothes pins in some way, maybe glittering them in red, but I really like the simplicity and how it works with the rest of my decor. Sometimes you just have to know when to stop!

Here is how is looks on the wall in my living room.

Love simple projects this time of year! This one would be really cute with Christmas subway art or any large canvas you may already be displaying in your home. Think outside of the box!

How do you display your holiday cards?

Until Next Time,

Twodaloo!
