Beautiful Ways to Celebrate Fall with Kids

Oh, how I love fall. Cooler temperatures, falling leaves, pumpkins on porches- the idea of it always gives me a case of the warm and cozies. However, since we live in Texas, right now the temps are still in the high 90s and the only falling leaves in our area are due to drought conditions! I wasn’t sure how I wanted to approach fall activities with my little ones this year- if I hold off until we actually see seasonal changes, we won’t be doing them until after Halloween, but I also wanted to keep our discussions relevant to what is actually going on around us. My solution? Use autumn-themed books and activities as a way to build anticipation for the fall, and have a big celebration on the day we spot the first fall color in the trees.  Luckily, there were tons of amazing ideas linked up to Discover & Explore last week, so it won’t be hard at all to find ways to celebrate fall in a big way!

1. Songs and Storytelling

Since I love storytelling and try to incorporate it into everything I can, I made up a little story about “fall fairies” adding color to the leaves on the trees to let us know that autumn is here. Every day, the twins race to the windows to check out the trees to see if the fall fairies came overnight.  Of course when they are older we’ll talk about the science behind the changing leaves, but right now they are having so much fun with this little ritual that I am in no rush! And wouldn’t you know, Let’s Play Music has this amazing song called “The Autumn Fairy” that fits perfectly with our story, along with lots of other lovely autumn songs.

2. Nature Walk

Once we spot our first fall leaves, I’m sure we’ll go on a walk in the “woods” to get a good look. Although we don’t live near a deep dark forest, we have plenty of parks and wooded nature trails to explore. We always end up with quite the collection of  natural items from our excursions- perhaps we’ll do some exploring using a mirror like Two of Everything did…

Or maybe take a closer look with a magnifying glass like KC Edventures.

Or maybe we’ll do both!

3. Nature Table

We’ll also be adding our fall finds to our seasonal nature table.  Ours is still a work-in-progress since we are between seasons, but here is one from Buggy and Buddy that is all ready for the fall!

4. Fall Art

Of course, we couldn’t have a celebration at Twodaloo central without a good art project, right? Here’s an amazing autumn leaf suncatcher idea from Fireflies and Mudpies.

Since my twins are still very little, we do lots of sensory exploration when we are learning new things.  We might combine our nature findings with some yummy pumpkin play dough and loose parts like Fantastic Fun and Learning.

Or what about this beautiful and fragrant cinnamon maple salt tray from My Nearest and Dearest?

We could also connect sensory play and literacy by using this idea from Stir the Wonder, who created a sensory bin based on the book Red Leaf, Yellow Leaf by Lois Ehlert.
